Laboratory

At Sault Tribal Health Laboratory, we utilize state-of-the –art instrumentation and equipment to provide quality, consistent and accurate laboratory results to your physician.  Our comprehensive range of testing includes Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Serology and Microbiology.  Most of your laboratory testing will be performed right here in the Sault with same day turnaround time on most tests.  However, we also have a partnership with UP Health System in Marquette which provides you with more complex molecular testing, Cytology and Pathology.

Our highly trained staff of baccalaureate degreed technologists and certified phlebotomists is dedicated to providing comprehensive technical expertise as well as excellent customer service.  Our laboratory is fully accredited to comply with federal standards and licensed by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation (COLA).

Laboratory test results heavily influence a majority of the management and patient care decisions made by physicians each day.  At STHC Laboratory, we understand the responsibility that accompanies each and every specimen entrusted to us.  Quality and exemplary patient care are top priority.

Adequate patient preparation, specimen collection and specimen handling are essential prerequisites for accurate test results.  The accuracy of test results is dependent on the integrity of the specimen.  Proper patient preparation can help insure the integrity of the specimen and assist the phlebotomist in a less distressing blood collection.  Check with your physician, nurse or laboratory professional to see if there are any special requirements before you come to the laboratory.  Fasting tests require that you refrain from eating or drinking anything but water for 10-12 hours.  Always try to stay hydrated!

Phlebotomy services for our laboratory can be found in the following locations: Mackinac Straits Health Center, Hessel Tribal Health Center, Manistique Tribal Health Center, Munising Tribal Health Center, Newberry Tribal Health Center, Detour Clinic and Drummond Island Clinic.  We utilize a courier system which picks up specimens daily and returns them to the laboratory in Sault Sainte Marie for testing.

We are open Monday –Friday to serve you.  Most laboratory tests require no appointment; however, patients may need to schedule a “nurse only” appointment to have blood drawn at other locations besides the Sault Sainte Marie laboratory.
