Radiology

The medical imaging department provides diagnostic radiology, mammography and ultrasound imaging services for eligible patients.  The ordering physician or practitioner provides a written request including the reason/diagnosis for the exam desired.  If the patient was seen at Sault Ste. Marie Clinic, they could come directly down to our department or go to scheduling and make an appointment for the requested exam.   If the patient was seen and has an order from an outside provider, (cardiologist,  gynecologist, orthopedist, etc.) they would call the general scheduling number (906 632-5230) to make an appointment for that requested exam.   After the exam is completed, the images are read by a Radiologist and a written report is furnished to the ordering provider.  The provider will contact the patient with the results of the exam and treatment options.  If a patient is later referred to another physician, the images can be burned onto a CD and provided for that referral.

We are an ACCREDITED MAMMOGRAPHY  FACILITY  through the American College of Radiology and are Certified through the FDA under the Mammography Quality Standard Act.  We encourage screening mammograms  for early detection of breast cancer.  Follow-up imaging:  diagnostic mammography and breast ultrasound are also done at our facility.
ULTRASOUND IMAGING  is provided at our facility two days per week.  Because of this restricted schedule, it is extremely important to keep your appointment.  Certain ultrasound examinations require  a prescribed preparation prior to completion.  If the patient is not adequately prepped, the exam may need to be re-scheduled, which could result in a delay in treatment.

This service is provided to all tribal members and tribal employees eligible for services at the Health Center .

To make an appointment: Call Scheduling at the Sault Tribe Health Center:  906 632-5230.  You must ALWAYS have an ‘order’ from a provider.  If you have an order from an “outside provider” ; you must schedule an appointment prior to coming in.  If you have been seen by a provider at the clinic in Sault Ste. Marie, you may either come directly down to our department OR make an appointment for the requested exam.

The providers from all of the Tribal clinics may order medical imaging exams through the patient’s electronic health record (EHR).  The request is printed out directly to the Sault Ste. Marie Medical Imaging Location.   Outside physicians can also order medical imaging studies for eligible patients.   Requests can be faxed to: 906 632-5262

In October 2017, we installed the new HOLOGIC Selenia Dimensions 3D mammography unit offering the new standard of care for our patients. The Genius 3D Mammography exam detects significantly more breast cancers compared to 2D alone. Greater accuracy means better breast cancer detection and reduces call back, due to false positives by up to 40%. It offers the fastest available 3D scan time designed to minimize compression time, and the potential for motion artifact. The unit also features a new style compression paddle, which flexes making the compression less uncomfortable. Only the Genius 3D Mammography exam is FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.
